I was the Music Director for the University of Chicago's Acapella group Run For Cover. I was in the group from September 2022 to June 2026. I was elected to the Assistant Music Director position in March of 2023, and was elected as Music Director in March of 2025. The bulk of this job entailed running rehearsals, handling each of the arrangements we perform, whether that be writing my own from scratch, or making changes and suggestions on arrangements that other group members write.
My largest job was to lead rehearsals. I made rounds when each of the parts split up to learn a new song, checking in to make sure everything made sense, as well as making crucial decisions when it comes to the clarity of the music written. As some of our group members cannot read sheet music, this job becomes especially imperative in making sure that everyone is on the same page each step of the way.
In my time with the group, I arranged a total of 8 arrangements, and oversaw quite a few others, giving notes and feedback, and taking the final pass and polish on arrangements before they were presented to the group. The process of arranging a song can be long and arduous; it generally isn't as simple as writing down exactly what is heard in the published song. Acapella music is different in the sense that each part needs to be thought about both singularly and with the rest of the group. As a result, many arrangements come out having the same energy as the song they are based on but a completely different sound overall. I have also found that mashups are a great way to bring new life into existing songs, and giving new meaning to their lyrics by bringing two songs in conversation with each other. Mashups have been some of my favorite arrangements to write, and I think they are quite good.
